Service Learning: Kids’ English Friend Releases Christmas Videos 秦野の子どもたちへ向けて学生がクリスマスビデオを作成

In December 2020 Kids’ English Friend produced two Christmas videos for children in Hadano. Kids’ English Friend, a service-learning activity at Sophia University Junior College Division, has in the past put together activities aimed at exposing children in the Hadano community to English books and book-related games and songs. These activities were carried out by groups of students going to meet children at the Hadano Municipal Library or other Hadano city facilities. This year we have moved our activities online.

The Christmas videos teach children some English vocabulary words related to action verbs such as run, jump, fly, and shovel. Children warm up by moving their bodies to do these actions. Some of these verbs reappear in the Christmas story about Santa’s Christmas party. Children can watch the story and try to guess who each guest at Santa’s party is.
The students from Kids’ English Friend who created the original story and activities for children meet once a week at lunchtime to prepare. This year we are meeting online using the Zoom platform also used for many classes at Sophia University Junior College Division. The videos were also recorded online with each student participating from her own location.
Christmas is a special season at Sophia University Junior College Division and the students, staff, and faculty at Kids’ English Friend are glad to share the joy of Christmas with children in Hadano online!
