Learning to Read
One way to learn a language is to teach it to someone else. リテラシーと多文化教育 is a class in which students watch how teachers in the USA help children learn to read from kindergarten to grade 5 of elementary school. We learn about methods such as phonics used to teach reading and reflect on how seasoned teachers manage classrooms with diverse learners.
Students in this class are sometimes surprised when they see that children at first cannot read very well or write words correctly. Seasoned teachers both set high goals and use methods that children can apply at their current level of ability. My message to prospective students is to set your goals high but also to use the skills you already have to communicate in English.
