ゼミのテーマ

Topics in Liberal Arts

このゼミでは、どのようなことを、どのように学べるか

This seminar focuses on developing the academic skills necessary to explore and express issues in the liberal arts. In our first semester, students will learn how to define and research a topic. These topics will form the basis for discussions, presentations, and papers. Through peer exchanges, students will learn a variety of approaches to different topics. The basic ideas and terms necessary to discuss issues, make presentations, and write reports about them will be learned. Students will learn to identify and compare different aspects of their topics, including values, behaviors and beliefs. Also, in pre-zemi, students will learn how to talk about and understand in detail, and compare different cultures in terms of communication, the education system, the workplace, and family life.

このゼミで学んだことは将来どのように役立てることができるか

Members of society often accept things the way they are without question. A challenge for us in this seminar will be to learn how to study and use the Liberal Arts to critically examine our ideas and beliefs in order to develop strong and clear opinions about our own society and others. This skill will be useful in professional and everyday life. If you transfer to a four-year university, the critical thinking, reading, writing, and communication skills you learn in this seminar will help you as you participate in your future courses. If you are planning to work after graduation, the cultural insights and critical thinking skills you develop in this seminar will be useful immediately as you navigate the work culture and find your place in society.

学生へのメッセージ

This seminar will consist of small group discussions, lectures, and student reports. We will use a variety of handouts on different topics in our first semester to learn about some of the basic issues in liberal arts. Students will have a chance to research independently a topic they find particularly interesting. In addition, we will learn how to use PowerPoint to help us organize our ideas, which will then be made into individual and group presentations.
